This is largely an urban myth.
The amount of mercury in fillings is so small, is fixed with other metals, and is stable within the amalgam, that it really does not pose a health risk to the normal public. |

I have two female friends in their 50s who both swear that their undiagnosed physical maladies are caused by the amalgam fillings they had in their teeth for all these years. In the past 3 years, both have had the amalgam fillings removed and replaced with porcelain or gold. They are suffering from incessant fatigue/fibromyalgia-type plus a lot other symptoms.
When I heard about a possible connection with several health ills more than 18 years ago, I began having all my fillings removed and replaced as they came due (I had them originally put in during my teens and it was time for new fillings) with porcelain and gold. I have been amalgam-free for 7 years. I am not certainly if there is anything to it, but I am not taking chances. It was a very costly change-over. When my children obtain fillings, I do not enable amalgam fillings. That's my personal experience. Jeanene |

my fillings are old, and i have been replacing them with non-metal fillings (composites).
Mercury Does Leak Out of Your Fillings The ADA has said for the past 150 years that the mercury in amalgam is harmless and does not leak. However, no clinical studies were ever done and the FDA approved amalgam under the "grandfather clause" Subsequent studies have featured this not to be true. Over ten years ago the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine published an editorial (12 ) calling mercury fillings the chief source of mercury exposure to the US population. |
