and what does the law say regarding rest breaks?

    In the UK?

take a look at this extract from the CAB web site:

hours and rests. Nearly all workers have the right not to have to work for more than 48 hours on average, a week. Night workers cannot work an general of more than eight hours in each 24 hour period. Workers aged 18 and over (adult workers) are qualified to one day off each week. Workers aged 16-18 (adolescent workers) are qualified to two days off each week. Adult workers are qualified to eleven hours consecutive rest per day, and a minimum 20 small rest break if their working day is longer than six hours. Adolescent workers are qualified to 12 hours consecutive rest per day, and a minimum 30 small rest break if they work for longer than four and a half hours

i work a 24 hour shift. no they are not illegal, and it depends on your state law, but there should be a couple of 15 small breaks and at least a 30 small lunch period.. that is how it's in tennessee for the factory workers here..

Check with your state or provincial Labour Department or Ministry of Labour.

Every state has dissimilar labor laws. I've worked 12 hour shifts overnight. I obtain three 15 min breaks (one for each 4 hours worked) and a thirty min. lunch

    No.

However, there must be a clear 12 hour break between shifts.

No. There is no legislation for maximum hours.

The last review of rest breaks I am concious of was taken from the Factories Act and is Included in the current Health and Safety at Work Act. It called for a maximum of 5 hours work to be followed by a 10 small break.

If you have no clear cut schedule authored into your terms of employment then this is the most you could push for legally.

In theory if you obtain 2 / 10 small breaks, then your employer is complying with the law.

I also work 6 1/2 hour shifts without a break and there`s not a thing i can do about it ( I have tried )
