My friend sleeps all nite, up to 11 hrs at a time. He also claims to be very exhausted in the daytime and requires short naps of 45 minutes to 2 hours.
I cannot sleep like him. I go to bed at nite and obtain about 7 hrs of sleep, sometimes a little more and sometimes a little less. I cannot nap or I have troubles falling asleep or staying asleep at nite. I just wondered if he really is requiring all that sleep because he is older or is it a health problem or whats the deal? I cosidered when he went on 3 weeks vacation, he wouldn't be so sluggish, but it seemed to have made his napping worse. He would just spend the entire day in bed if he could. His house is filthy, his dishes are never done, he never mows his own yard, he never mops, or dusts or takes out the trash. I am perfectly ashamed of his lifestyle. He works full time and blames his dirty house on his work. |

No they do not need more sleep. Everyone requirements at least 8 hours of sleep not matter what the age. If he requirements naps and sleeps that much at night something is going on and he requirements to observe his doc to find out what is wrong.

A person at those age groups can easily manage with around 6 hours sleep per day.
More than that is just a bad custom that should be broken unless there are health troubles involved. This person may have depression so this should be checked out. |

He perhaps ought to observe a doc. If there's nothing wrong then he's perhaps just lazy. I know people in their 60's and 70's who don't sleep that much. But, typically, the older we get, the less sleep we really need.

you may be like that someday too ! and it's not that far around the corner ! Is he on medication ? Some medication makes people sleepy. Better there than on the road.

No, 54 year old people do not call for more sleep that 40 year old people. You have to ask various questions, Is he on many of meds? Is he bored? Is he depressed? All of these will cause a person to become despondent and want to sleep a lot. If it persists you should talk him into going to a doctor and observe if his immune system is down or if he is anemic.

Alot of people's first cosidered is depression, which is a possibility. Before assuming that is the issue try homeopathic remedies like ginseng, etc... If this doesn't work then I would confer your doctor.
I agree...11 hours is a really long time to sleep/stay in bed. |
