When I was eight, I got picked up from school ( complete surprise) and taken to the dentist( went periodically anyway).I was given gas and had 6 teeth out on the same day. Same again the next month but 5 out this time. Apparently I had too a lot teeth in my mouth so they took them out so they will be straight and nice. I agree, I do have lovely teeth and I'm glad I had it done, but god was it horriffic. Just wondered if other parents do this for their Kids.

My son had to have his front teeth pulled, as the adult set were coming in behind the baby teeth. But I didn't surprize him with it - he knew well in advance that we were going to the dentist to observe what could be done.

Wow...that seems really strange. Umm....if i had been your parent, I would have ready you for the way instead of just suprising you like that. And the answer to the initial question is yes, i take my kids to the dentist, but have never heard of a child having that a lot extra teeth.

My b/f had a similar experience to you but now as an adult refuses point blank to visit the dentist - our son (10) is a regular at our dentist - doesnt look forward to it but goes and comprehend whats gonna happen.

What??? Take them to the dentist?

Or scare the s*** out of them by just dumping them in the chair for the work to be done?

My kids were taken periodically to the dentist, although I was terrified of going, and tried not to pass my fear to them.

They all 3 still go regularly, and so do I now I found a dentist who understands how I feel about him!!

My youngest daughter had a brace when younger, but all the work and everything was her choice and discussed every step of the way.

When I was a kid you just did as you were told and got on with it. God forbid that you made a fuss, and so did my Mum.

Yes I did when they were younger. They had the normal braces and now they are in their 20s they thank me for it. Many people do not take their kids and unfortunately suffer later in life.

I have always taken my son to the same dentist as she is an great dentist and has always treated him really well. He never minded going to the dentists whereas when I was young it was always a dreaded ordeal. Now she has gone completely private and you even have to pay for your childs treatments. Ive tried a dissimilar nhs dentists but they were terrible, so we are back paying a fortune each visit. Its worth it though.

You should always take your child to the dentist for regular check ups. Then they would observe that going is a common thing and nothing to be scared about . But i have to say i went and i don't ever bear in mind my mum not telling me what was going on even extractions by gas.

Because you were 8yrs old at the time i would say that these were deciduous teeth (baby teeth), that were not falling out so had to be taken out for your permanent teeth to erupt in their correct positions.

Your dentist perhaps decided to do one side in one visit and the other side the other visit. because deciduous teeth have little or no root by the time you obtain to 8yrs, which is why they become wobbly and fall out. The extractions would have been simple and as you were on gas and air it would have impeded you coming back for further visits.

Be thankful your dentist and your parents did what they did you now have nice straight teeth. Your parents perhaps didn't want you to obtain worked up or worried before you went

    .

We observe people all the time who are very nervous because of previous bad dental experiences and lots of them are when gas and air was used frequently. Dentists now are far dissimilar and the medicament's obtainable are far more advanced.

As for my children I'm perhaps worse as I'm a dental nurse so not only am i over eager with there appointments but its me who treats them!

Children should observe a dentist every 6 months as they have a faster rate of decay than adults due to a more acid saliva. Dentistry today should not be horrific or terribly painful but there is no denying it ......it is not a comfortable experience. However there are gentle and understanding dentists then there a the clumsy and unfeeling pigs..........it is every parents duty to know the difference before taking their child for treatment.
