My previous question regarding my elderly father who contracted shingles 7 weeks ago - he has seen a doctor twice - once within 72 hours of contracting it and then abut 4 weeks into it - both offered painkillers nothing else. Now he is coming around his 7th week (tomorrow) he is still very frail and although the bulk of the spots have dried up he is still suffering badly with his knee and the surrounding area - with red blotches and white blisters appearing and burning - surely - i would have cosidered - by now he will be healing - any adice on this matter will be much appreciated.

You have to catch shingles as soon as the blisters appear then, and only then, a course of tablets can be given which knocks it down quite quickly. Even then it takes six or seven weeks to heal. After two days there is no chance for the tablets to work as it's too established.

Painkillers are good, calamine lotion or other assuaging cream that cools whilst not sealing the surface helps.

Other than that there is little that can be done.

Sadly when older people obtain shingles it can take a long time to obtain over it.

I have never heard of shingles appearing around lower extremities, it usually springs up around the chest. My father had it various years ago, and once you obtain it...you can obtain it again. It is usually brought on again by stress and the patient with shingles requirements to refrain from any stressful situations.

They are usually given a method of steroids to aid fight it. My father had to take them daily for various days. Once they obtain older, it's more of an ordeal for them since the body can't handle it as easily as a younger person. However, shingles occur the bulk commonly in older people than in younger.

If you dad (or you) have any worries about it, or the treatment he has received, then I would suggest going to another doctor for another opinion.

Best of luck to you and your father.

Shingles is a miserable complaint & I do sympathise with your father. It is a viral condition which responds to Acyclovir IF it's caught within the first 24 - 48 hours. Once it's established, the Acyclovir doesn't work.

Effective painkillers are needed, as well as the calomine lotion suggested by another 'answerer'. If the nerve pain is really unbearable - & it often is - then a drug called Amytriptylene might be used. This takes 2 to 3 weeks to make a difference, so patience is needed.

Shingles can take a long time to sprint its course. If it's possible, ensure that your father has a good deal of fluids & a nourishing diet. Even if he only feels like consuming a minute amount, make it 'count' in food value terms. He requirements to build up his strength and his immune system.

I do hope he feels better soon.
