how long ago did it happen. the redness and swelling makes me think it could be infected. also what kind of drainage do you have. if it's pink, not infected. if it's puss-like, yellow, green, perhaps infected. are you certainly you don't need stitches? if you're unsure then you should observe a dr. you don't want to risk infection as infections can spread and be very dangerous.

Make certainly you wash it and then put antibiotic on it....peroxide or whatever. Don't wait. Loosely cover it if possible too.

Red, puffy, painful, pus, not getting better. The swelling I think is a dead giveaway. Put Neosporin and cover it with a bandaid and alteration the bandaid at least 1x a day, better if 2x especially after a shower.

First off, clean it out really wonderful with peroxide. Are you certainly you dont need stitches? You will know if its infected when puss starts oozing out. The swolleness suggests the cut is deaper than you think and you call for stitches.

redness, with swelling and with a yellowish discharge...sore and tender to the touch.... a person with an infected cut will also have a fever ranging from mild to high as the infection stay longer in the body.....If in doubt, pls confer a doctor esp if the cut is made by a rusty object...You need tetanus shot for that...

The redness and swelling indicates mild to moderate infection, if you also find that there is pus that can be extruded from the would, then there is some infection. A stiff dose of topical Neosporin or similar triple antibiotic ointment will aid to heal it quicker.

It sounds infected.
You can use hydrogen peroxide to clean it out some. Keep in mind that it does not discriminate between wonderful tissue & bad, so flush only for about 60 seconds. I would slowly pour the peroxide over the wound while keeping injured body part over the sink or tub. Then gently wash your wound with an antibacterial soap. If you have any betadine, dab some of that on there. Finally, put neosporin or something comparable to that on it (a triple antibiotic ointment) You will want to keep it covered for the first couple of days and repeat steps above, except for the hydrogen peroxide part, daily. Allow it it air out, probably in the evening after you have cleaned it, and then cover it back up with a band-aid to keep germs from getting on it. *Do Not Use Neosporin if this is a puncture wound, as punctures need to heal from the inside out & Neosporin will aid the skin to heal faster than the interior of a deep puncture...which could trap infection under the skin. |

Cat, these answers are exactly right. If you're still in doubt, go to your mom. Infection is nothing to play around with.

I had a deep infected puncture wound and the dr told me to soak it in very warm water with dreft baby detergent (the powder kind you put in the washing machine) It really does work. Soak for about 15 min twice a day.
