I just got braces yesterday, the pain from the braces themselves I can deal with, but I can't stand the braces scratching at the back of my mouth causing monstrous ulcers, etc.
The Orthodontist gave me wax to put on my teeth, but in one day I've used a container already because I feel I need to cover all my teeth. I didn't use it at night to save the wax, but I woke up with 3 monstrous ulcers and many of pain. Is there anything else I can do to stop my annoying braces from scratching me? Any products? If there is please let me know! Keep in mind that I survive in Australia though. |

You might want to try using a mouth guard while sleeping. I don't think you would want to use it during the day. Give it a few days. Your mouth will obtain use to the braces and they will feel fine.

I had braces as did my daughter and to be honest, until your mouth adjusts to the braces and develops calluses, the wax is your best friend. You might want to contact the orthodontist and ask for more. One thing you might try that could aid is something like OraJel (don't know if they have it in Australia but it's a jel we buy at the drugstore that you put on sores and toothaches in your mouth). That could help. Other than that...your mouth has to develop calluses and then it will stop developing ulcers. Braces are literally a pain, but the end result is great.

I feel your pain!!! I just got mine today and my lips are like raw!!! What I did was I stocked up on the dental wax and I put it in the places where it hurt the most. If it just mildly irritates me, I leave it alone. I just put it on all over for when I go to sleep. For the ulcers use the special mouthwash that helps to heal the sores. But like I said, until you obtain use to the braces, wax is your new best friend....good luck!!!

Hey, i just got braces and was doing some research on why they scratch. If its minor, your better off with wax, but you can also go to your orthodontist to clip off the wire. The following is from wikipedia:
"When teeth move, the end of the arch wire may become displaced, causing it to poke the back of the patient's cheek. Dental wax can be applied to cushion the protruding wire. The orthodontist must be called instantly to have it clipped, or a painful mouth ulcer may form. If the wire is causing severe pain, it may be important to carefully bend the edge of the wire in with a spoon or other piece of equipment (i.e. tweezers) until the wire can be clipped by an orthodontist." i hope this help, i know the pain your talking about. |
