    well, according to http://www.al.com/news/press-register/index.ssf?/base/news/1189934476174290.xml&coll=3

    it doesn't seem to

    {for those that don't want to click.. from Alabama: "Last year in Mobile County, 4,629 new cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis were reported"

    "Statewide, syphilis cases were up 60 percent last year, compared with 2005 (from 583 cases to 931).

    Chlamydia has also been on the rise, increasing 44-fold from 509 cases in 1994 to 22,560 in 2006"

    "A lack of education weighs heavily on a county's rate, health officials said.

    In Alabama public schools, students are taught abstinence-based sex education" }

    Should abstinence even be taught?

    Dont think it's the technique forward.

    Think free contraception and a wonderful education of the risks of unprotected sex should be on offer.

    Also think that it should be easier and more commonplace to obtain a sexual health check up because i think many of the troubles come from young teens in couples who beginning out using condoms but stop after they have been together a while.

    it should be taught, but average this is reality its not going to happen. what they should do is......buy kids under 18 chastity belts. and lock away the key until they are old ample to take responsibility for their actions.......which we know this wont happen ever!!!!

    Abstinence would make STD's go down, but it won't aid kids who are going to be sexually active. They need to learn harmless sex while emphasizing that abstinence will prevent both pregnancy and STD's. Less teens are sexually active today primarily because of STD's and things like HIV which is very serious.

    For goodness sake - is having sex compulsory? Sure, it's all about education, but also is about self respect. Children, by which I mean younger than 14 should be taught that it's not a wonderful idea. I know I'm an old lady now, but I respected my parents wishes and would have been really ashamed to let them down. That sounds terribly old-fashioned now, but really, do we want young adults behaving like animals and following the herd instinct? It's a matter of being educated to believe that young people are special and shouldn't be following the likes of today's so-called pop stars/TV stars. Children should be permitted to be children - not miniature adults. If they can't protect themselves then they shouldn't be taking part in adult lifestyles.

    I think it does lower rates of std's and it's extremely necessary that abstinence is taught in schools.
