I am in wonderful health, had suffered from depression for 3 years but am now on a wonderful medication which has relieved this greatly [Cipralex (escitalopram)]. I fall asleep earlyish at night, due to being really sluggish, before 11pm mostly. I sleep all night just fine and wake up natrually around 9am. I am not that active during the day, and am slightly underweight. Lately I keep getting REALLY sleepy in the afternoon, around 2-3pm, and if I put myself to bed, I can easily sleep for 2-3 hours.
Does anybody know why this might be happening? Am I getting too much sleep? Is it physical or mental? Curious to know if anybody has experienced the same. For those judgemental folk - I do not scrounge, I left my very wonderful job in June of this year to be the full time carer to our autistic son and 3 year old adopted son who was just adopted. We do not 'scrounge' anything, my wife is a surgeon. |

Have you had your blood glucose levels checked lately?
You may be sustaining low blood sugar, and a snack at this time just may give you the energy you need to make it the rest of the day..or until dinner! |

Probably too much sleep and not ample exercise. Try starting a light exercise routine, probably just some rapid walking around the park to commence with. This will obtain your blood pumping faster and obtain more oxygen to your muscles. People who exercise tend to have more energy and need less sleep.
Most people actually need about 9 hours of sleep (but very few actually obtain it). If you're getting 10 every night and an extra 2 or 3 in the afternoon, that is really too much. You perhaps need to find something to occupy your time. Maybe you can't work, but could you volunteer? Could be a thyroid issue, have you checked the side effects of the medication you're taking? EDIT: Now I'm confused. How do you obtain to sleep until 9am and not be very active during the day if you're the full time carer for an autistic son and a 3 year old? I hope our comments are helping, but that additional info really makes it look like something is wrong. If your wife is a surgeon, surely you have all the medical info you can possibly need right at your fingertips? |

im exactly the same except im not on medication or anything. i think its associated to my disease though so i cant really help. it could well be that your body is having more sleep than it should be, causing it to feel exhausted as its getting mixed up signals. almost like as if you wernt having ample but your mind may have got confused by it. after that was happening to me i had to fight to stay awake and i do that every day, its difficult and makes me feel ill and gives me headaches but its slowly making a difference. try and alteration the routine of when you go to bed or when you wake up and observe if that makes a difference. eg go to bed at 9 and observe if you still wake up at 9 or maybe a few hours earlier. you should also observe your gp about this just to observe what they advise and rule out anything grave causing it. plus if you're on your feet during the day or always busy, that can cause tiredness too. i hope it passes.

i`ve had this problem, i think it`s partially due to being indoors too much with not ample air circulation. try going outside into the fresh air more often, also try some exercise. also, your pillows may need changing, i bought some new ones and that seems to help. pillows tend to obtain grubby and dirty after a while and you`re inhaling all that muck all the time you`re lying on it causing even more sleepiness. also, try opening a window for a while. also check you hav`nt got poisonous gases leaking from a boiler if you have one.
