I got a thin shard of glass in my finger. It went in via the tip straight up and down, like a needle for example. There is still a peice of glass in my finger. It's really thin but maybe half a cm long. Theres nothing sticking out to obtain ahold of like a splinter. It broke off down in. My question is will it work it"s technique out on it's own? I have insurance but I hate to go to the doctor and have the co pay for a "splinter" but what if the skin heals over it and it doesn't work it's technique out? I can feel it in there when I touch my finger or bump it on something. Anyone ever have this happen? Will my body ultimately eject it somehow?

I would suggest going in and having it removed. It could be a very dangerous thing if not.

usually, the body ejects things that are foreign to it. splinters are no exception

Though I am NOT a doctor, I would suggest that you keep is clean and just keep an eye on it. If it begins to hurt, go observe a doctor, if the skin begins to change, observe a doctor.

There is the problem of infection while the glass shard is still there. I would pour hydrogex peroxide on it to keep it from getting infected, but the point is, it need to be taken out or you won't heal.

You should observe a doctor at least to prevent it from becoming something bigger than it's now. Your health is worth the co-pay, believe me.

Go to the doc, and obtain it taken care of. My Mom did that, and it hurt for months, and hurt again when it worked it's technique out.

Get it taken out. You don't want to risk having more pain or possibly an infection.

I have had this happen... depending on how deep yours is, I let mine work its technique out on it's own.

Here is what I did to aid it along when it got closer to the surface. Warm water , submerge your finger in it for 15-20 mins... the water will expand your skin and make it all "raisiny"... this is good, and the glass MAY just pop out with your skin under these conditions.. or I just grabbed a sewing needle, and poked it out, hurt for a while, but if you squeeze your finger tightly enough, you can't really feel it anyways--which is the bulk likely what the doctor would charge your insurance company to do. wonderful luck, and dont worry about infection as long as you clean ur cut everyday and use antibiotic ointment you will absolutely be fine!

people come into the er at my hospital quite often for something like this. the doctor will likely want an x-ray to verify that there is a piece of glass in there and what angle it went in. glass is a little hard to observe on an x-ray but a wonderful tech should be able to demonstrate a piece .5 cm long. the doctor will then eradicate it, close the wound, and want another x-ray exam to verify they got all of the glass out. you have insurance for this type of thing...use it.
